In a mature forest, the Corteza Amarilla can reach a height of up to 25 m and a diameter of over 50 cm. In younger forests, such as most of Guanacaste, the tree does not reach such large proportions and often has a highly twisted trunk.
There are at least 31 species of insects that feed on the plant tissues of yellow bark (other than flowers, fruits, and seeds). These include the larvae of 21 moth species, 1 fly species, 1 wasp species, the adults of 6 beetle species, 2 bug species, and 1 ant species.
